“I learned by touching and feeling and doing and poking.”

I was able to learn how we do things from the production side. When I started I did a lot of concrete testing and purchasing and job management. I set up the testing program in house for Kalman in 1990.

When I got into the sales engineering part of the business I could answer the questions as to what we’ve done in a particular situation based of my experience and utilizing almost 100 years of company experience to answer the tough questions of what works and what doesn’t work in the world of concrete floors.

So, it’s a relationship business. The customer is buying a system that has been developed and proven over many years. So we have foolproof systems and my job is to implement them into the structures we are going to build or renovate.

I’m in my 25th year right now. When Carl Ytterberg first hired me in my 20s he said something that has always stuck with me: ‘I hope you will be with Kalman for 40 years.’

A fifth-generation native of Colorado, Bakke was a painting contractor for a number of years before joining Kalman.

He has been designated a Certified Concrete Technologist by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association and has served in various leadership positions in the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
